CASE STUDIES
Case Study #1: Dementia
Nicole is a 75 year-old single, retired Chicago Public School teacher who suffers from Dementia and was living on her own. RNR Guardianship was contacted by family members because of their growing concern that she could no longer manage her finances or provide herself with proper nutrition. Although they were handling certain tasks such as paying her bills and purchasing her groceries, they were concerned about her safety because she was living alone. With the family's help, RNR Guardianship was appointed plenary guardian of the person in March of 2017. Our number one priority was to relocate Nicole to an appropriate living situation. Today, Nicole is not alone, she resides in a facility that specializes in memory care. She is provided with all her meals daily, is actively involved in programs offered by the facility, as well as attends off-site community outings. All her physical needs are taken care of at the facility. A primary medical physician, psychiatrist, and podiatrist monitor Nicole as needed. RNR Guardianship attends care conferences, while also meeting with Nicole and facility staff monthly to ensure all her needs are being met.
Case Study #2: Paranoid Schizophrenia
Robert is a 65 year-old divorced man who was living alone in a condominium. He has a long history of mental illness, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and has a history of multiple hospitalizations. His family along with his personal banker/trust officer contacted RNR Guardianship regarding their growing concern with Roberts living situation; concern with his handling of finances (Robert was lending money to individual's whom he called "friends"); and with his repeated non-compliance with taking prescribed medications. Robert had an independent psychiatric evaluation completed with detailed evidence that guardianship would be appropriate. With the family's consent, RNR Guardianship was appointed plenary guardian of the person in 2016. Since Robert did not have health insurance, RNR Guardianship was instrumental in applying for and securing private health insurance coverage. RNR Guardianship also applied and received approval for Robert's Medicare and SSDI benefits. Robert currently resides in an SMHRF (Specialized Mental Health Rehab Facility). He has been medication compliant since admission. RNR Guardianship accompanies him monthly to see his psychiatrist and also attends care conferences to discuss his on-going plan of care. The facility has a medical director on-site who monitors Robert on an ongoing basis. Robert participates daily with on-site therapy groups, he enjoys taking walks and shopping at local stores. As an educated gentlemen with a college degree, Robert has many interests, one in particular is his love of music. As a talented piano player, he's well known in the facility and enjoys entertaining his peers by playing the piano. RNR Guardianship works closely with his family coordinating visits to see them, as well as keeping them involved and up-to-date regarding his well being.
